About Us

HandsOn Hong Kong was founded in 2007 and is a legally registered charity under the name "HandsOn China Limited," which includes affiliates in Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu, China. It is an affiliate of the international volunteer network, HandsOn Network (HON), headquartered and registered as a nonprofit organization in the United States.
Our mission is two-fold: to help charities meet their volunteer needs and help individuals who want to give back to the community do so in a meaningful way. To accomplish our mission, we partner with local charities to develop volunteer projects and to recruit, train, and manage volunteers and volunteer projects. The types of volunteer projects we organize range from activities with children, such as helping local primary students improve their English skills and providing after-school tutoring to ethnic minority students, to helping the elderly and people with disabilities, to animal welfare, and other areas.
The primary objectives of HOHK include:
- Promoting volunteerism and community service as an essential aspect of life in Hong Kong;
- Supporting charity and corporate partners with volunteer project design and implementation;
- Offering diverse volunteer opportunities by partnering with charities that address a wide variety of issues, including poverty, children, education, elderly, disabled, immigrants, environment, and animal welfare;
- Providing volunteer opportunities to both Hong Kong natives and foreign residents in either Chinese or English;
- Creating innovative, high-impact ways of making valuable contributions to people’s lives;
- Making volunteering as accessible and rewarding as possible and providing a wide range of options to suit diverse interests, experiences, and schedules; and
- Providing a high-quality experience for each volunteer and charity working with HOHK.
HandsOn Hong Kong (HOHK) strives to be the first point of contact for individuals in Hong Kong who want to be involved in community service. We are a nonprofit organization that actively recruits and manages volunteers to participate in volunteer activities operated by local charities. Using an international model of volunteerism that has been utilized in nearly 70 cities worldwide, HOHK acts as an intermediary between volunteers and charity organizations.
HOHK aims to serve local charities and volunteers in four primary ways:
Volunteer Activity Development and Management.
HOHK works with charities to either recruit volunteers for their existing activities or help them to develop, manage, and recruit volunteers for new activities.
Volunteer Management.
HOHK provides each volunteer activity with a Volunteer Project Coordinator. These Coordinators liaise with the volunteers and charities, handle logistics, and participate in the volunteer activity to ensure it runs smoothly.
Ease and Flexibility.
A key aspect of each HOHK volunteer activity is flexibility. Volunteer opportunities are provided at convenient times for busy working professionals, students, parents, and others interested in community service, but who have limited time. HOHK volunteer opportunities do not require a long-term commitment. Individuals are also able to register as volunteers and sign up for volunteer activities online, saving them the time of researching and contacting a charity directly. Finally, by directly recruiting and managing volunteers, we aim to make utilizing volunteers easier for charities.
Quality Volunteer Activities.
While flexibility is important, so is the quality of the experience for our volunteers and charity partners. HOHK strives to provide volunteer activities that are meaningful for our volunteers and charity partners. The majority of volunteer activities involve some type of interaction between the volunteers and the beneficiaries of a charity, whether it be socializing, playing games, or learning a new skill. No matter what type of activity, we aim to impact the charities we work with and their beneficiaries, as well as the volunteers.
Both individuals and charity partners may join and partner with HOHK at no cost.
